The aim of this conference is to explore the various effects of sanctions on civilian populations. Iraq serves as an excellent case study, as it has experienced the impact of sanctions for over 10 years.

This conference wishes to encourage a healthy debate on the following issues:

1) What are the economic impacts of sanctions on a country?

2) How does this economic impact affect the health and welfare of civilians?

3) How do sanctions directly target the health and well being of civilians?

4) Do sanctions serve any positive purposes to the global community?

5) Who is paying the price? What are the bioethics of sanctions?

6) What should the Canadian response be towards sanctions?

It might also prove necessary to examine the political situations/dilemmas that led to the implementation of sanctions on Iraq.
